Obviously it's not easy to be a Hesperia Unified School Board Member. Board members have to abide by the Professional Governance Standards, trust each other and the Superintendent and provide direction and empowerment to those in charge of educating our children. It is the Board's responsibility to monitor and review the effectiveness of the current policies, programs and personnel. They make sure that the people in charge are able to explain the success or failure of the plan and policies. If the effectiveness of the program is questionable, it needs to be re-evaluated. I believe that is what this Board has been attempting to do.

During the 6 months of service by this Board there have been numerous changes. Resistance is normal, but new and fresh ideas need to be considered. Several citizens say that valuable personnel have left because of the Board. The truth is a majority of them left for BETTER paying jobs. Some retired and some left because they were afraid of answering questions that would hold them accountable for their ineffectiveness. Due to changes a variety of perspectives have been presented at Board meetings, and most of them have been offered to the Board in a professional manner. Others have been openly hostile towards the Board and have literally questioned every decision made. Former Board members, previous management personnel and those who have had to cope with some of the changes seem to be spearheading the efforts to incite the recall of the Board.

The decisions made behind closed doors are made to protect the dignity and confidentially of those involved, not to hide decisions from the public. However, I think our Board needs to communicate to the public and the educational team why they have made some of the decisions they have made. It would be nice to see media coverage that is fair and balanced. I realize there are legalities that I'm not familiar with but better communication might restore some confidence from the community.
