A sagging real estate climate didn't put much of a dent in the Hesperia Unified School District's enrollment figures.

Expecting a 2007-08 district-wide enrollment of 22,378, there were 21,952 public school students starting the school year last week in Hesperia. Although that number was 426 less than projected, the number is almost certain to grow.

"Even though things are slow in real estate, we'll probably be able to get pretty close to our projection or exceed it," said the HUSD's assistant superintendent of business services George Landon.

Enrollment was spread relatively evenly between elementary and secondary student populations with 11,413 at elementary schools and 10,539 enrolling in Hesperia's secondary schools.
