Good Evening Board Members, Staff and Guest. As stated last May before we went on summer break, my name is Frank Gutierrez and I am the ASB President of Hesperia High School, Home of the Scorpions! These lovely ladies to my side are the ASB Vice Presidents Miss Emily Guzman and Miss Tiffany Turner who will be attending each board meeting to help with our presentation.

At Hesperia High School we are starting our second week of classes and I must say it is looking like a great year already! Staff and administrators were reporting on how smooth opening day went for us. After some of our Scorpions didn't make it back on the first week of school, we are still have 3566 students in attendance. Passing periods should be very interesting!

Even before the first bell rang for classes, the ASB Leadership students were busy at work during the summer planning for homecoming and the opening of the new school year. The Monday before school started Leadership students were treated to a Welcome Bar-B_Q. While enjoying hotdogs and marshmallow salad, the 44 students mingled and looked over proposed Homecoming Themes. At the end of the ceremonies the theme was decided, and it looks like were headed to the Jungle! It will be a Safari Sensation. Our homecoming is scheduled for the week of September 17, it is sure to be a wild fun time! Later on in the week, we held our first ever Open House! Over 1000 students came to enjoy the festivities! Tours were given of the expansive campus; the student store, as well as the Textbook Office were open for those students who wanted to get a jump start on homework and getting their PE clothes. Finally on Thursday, the always exciting Freshman Orientation took place.

The event sponsored by ASB was very successful, but honestly I think the free hotdogs and sodas might have helped a little bit! With more tours, textbooks given out and PE clothes sold, it still ran smoothly and helped with any anticipated long lines the first week of school.

Speaking of new things, our campus had undergone extensive addition over this summer. We have added over 20 portables in the W section to accommodate the growth in new teachers and new students. Our science complex is well under way, and I must say our science teachers are as excited as "electrons" for the completion of the new classrooms. Our upper cafeteria received an addition, an extra double wide portable to make more room for famished students. Our attendance office has been remodeled along with our reception area and there are new lockers in the gym. In addition to our physical changes, this year Hesperia High School has nearly 50 new staff members and about 40 of those are teachers. To welcome them to their new home, ASB Leadership held an Ice Cream Social last Wednesday to answer questions and quench appetites! Also something new at Scorpion Country is SSR which is Silent Sustained Reading. On Tuesday and Thursday, our students free read for 20 minutes during a reserved time in their 3rd period. This program has been proven to be successful in other schools as students tend to do better academically when they include reading in their course of study.

The Senior Class of 2008 will be holding a Grad Fair on August 23, 2007. Seniors will be able to order Cap & Gowns, Graduation Announcements and Class Rings. On Thursday August 30 we will be holding our annual Parent Night. During this event, parents are introduced to Staff and the campus. Each parent attends their students classes and gets a chance to meet with their teachers. Also, parents get an idea of how fast you really have to walk to get to class in six minutes of passing period which should be fun!

The exciting world of Scorpion Sports in underway! Last year, our Scorpion Athletes did amazing things, the highlight of which was our Girls Softball team which won their first ever CIF Division V Title! Congratulations Ladies! In the other world of sports, our Cross Country Team, under the command of Coach Lucas, are holding tryouts this week, we wish them the best of luck! Our Girls Tennis team, under the leadership of Coach Taper, are holding tryouts this week also. They are looking forward to a great season! The Girls Volleyball squad, under the command of Coach Lopez, have been holding tryouts over this past week. I must say, I think we might be "setting" ourselves up for an amazing season! Last but certainly not least, our Scorpion Football team is well under way. They've been practicing hard over the summer, and Coach Kistner is looking forward to showing the Valley what were made of! Do you hear that? I think some "keys" are shaking!

All in all, great things are happening at Hesperia High School. We look forward to an amazing year here in Scorpion Country! Emily and Tiffany will now pass out our opening newsletter and copies of our handbook for all to read. Are there any questions?

Thank you and Good Night!
