Second verse, same as the first.

The attempted recall of three Hesperia Unified School District board members is now on its second incarnation -- the organizers of the recall attempt failed to get a draft petition filed with the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters by an October 22 deadline, forcing them to start over from scratch -- and while the petition statements intended to get residents to sign it may be new, the official response from the three targeted board members is much the same.

"They said the same things, but they changed a few words," recall committee spokeswoman Lori Nielson said Wednesday. "They don't answer the charges, they just say how wonderful they are."

"I just turned in basically the same thing," board member Hardy Black said. "I think I added a few more grandchildren."

Two of Black's children have had children since he filed his response to the first version of the recall petition in August, bringing the total number to 41. Black said his response is the same because, he said, the recall committee's complaints are without merit.

Board vice-president Robert Kirk's recall response was functionally identical as well, Kirk said.

"There really isn't anything any different in the whole situation," board member Lee Rogers said Friday. "I still feel the same way, I still feel we're doing a good job."

The question of when district residents will actually see a petition to sign or not sign remains up in the air.

"Well, our petition got kicked out again. [The registrar staff member] didn't really go into it for me; she just said there were some minor, minor things," Nielson said. "We're going to send it back on Monday."

The recall petitions must include the full written response from each targeted board member and be identical in wording and format to the registrar's template.

"People just don't understand: It's a very, very precise thing, and there's no one to help you," Nielson said. "They don't want [an approved petition] to be challenged."
