For Dena Adams, and 880 Carmel Elementary School students, last fall's diabetes walk was personal.

"I began this fundraiser last year, because I've had four students who are diabetic and we currently have three at our school," said Adams, a third grade teacher at Carmel. "My husband, who is a [Eucalyptus Elementary School] teacher, is also diabetic."

During the walk on November 30, the students wore stickers, saying who they were walking for, "whether it is a classmate, family member, or people in general."

The students also signed a banner declaring whom they were walking to support.

In all, the students raised $2,200 for the American Diabetes Association, bringing their two-year total to $8,900. Carmel Elementary will present a check to an association representative in February.
