Starting this week, Hesperia City Council meetings will be held on Tuesdays, not Wednesdays.

"It was just kind of cumulative," City Clerk Vicki Soderquist said Monday. "The council and staff have become more involved in the [League of California Cities] and most of their sessions start on Wednesdays."

A growing number of council members and staffers attend league training sessions and workshops, and so, on December 5, in a unanimous decision by the council, the meeting dates were changed.

Meeting dates were moved to Wednesday night in 2000. They were previously held on Thursdays, but late-running meetings could be a problem, since approximately only half the city hall staff worked on each Friday.

But Wednesday night meetings were unpopular with some residents from the start.

"The religious community expressed their concern," Soderquist said, "Because so many of them have bible study and like that."

And Hesperia is in good company on their new meeting date, according to Soderquist..

"Other cities in the High Desert meet Tuesday nights. So it just seemed to work out better all the way around."

The Hesperia City Council meets Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Hesperia City Hall, 9700 Seventh Avenue.
