When Amy and Stephen Green decided to open a hair salon in Hesperia they wanted its reputation to spread by word of mouth. Almost a year after opening, Chatter Box is becoming the talk of the town - literally.

"This is a place where people can come and talk and talk. We all like to talk here," Amy Green said.

After struggling for the first six months to attract a solid clientele, the popularity of the I Avenue took off before last Christmas when several experienced hairstylists joined Chatter Box.

"It's been great ever since then," she said.

Today, Chatter Box is a full-service hair salon, performing hair cuts for women, men and children and specializing in hair color, hair weaving and extensions and facial waxing. In the not-too-distant future, the salon also will soon offer facials, manicures and pedicures, according to the owners.

"That's our main goal," Stephen said, "because we want to offer a full service salon."

A Victor Valley native, Amy Green started at Hesperia High and graduated from Excelsior Education Center in Victorville. As a sophomore, she began taking cosmetology classes at the Regional Occupational Program behind Mojave High.

Before opening Chatter Box, she was a hairstylist once a week at an assisted living facility in Victorville where a family member resided.

Married for four years, Green's vocation enables her to tailor her schedule to suit her young family, which includes 18-month-old Tara Brooke.

"I can choose my own schedule."

Although Amy Green is the hairstylist of the family, her husband pitches in where he can. Working by day for LandSafe Inc. in San Bernardino, he helps the salon stylists with maintenance-related duties on weeknights and weekends.

"He does simple things from taking the trash out to helping with the water. I could do it, but he likes to do it."

Owning a hair salon is more than just a good, flexible job. It affirms Green's positive attitude and bubbly personality.

"I enjoy the interaction. I enjoy pampering them and making them feel appreciated. I always wanted to help other people. I love it. It's the best job in the world."
