An argument between two homeless men apparently escalated into violence and murder.

On Saturday, around 6 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a report of a man down in a vacant field at the intersection of Sultana Street and C Avenue.

There they discovered Jeff Garber, 43, lying unresponsive and bleeding from a wound on the upper body. He was transported to Desert Valley Hospital, dying there at approximately an hour after deputies had first found him, the apparent victim of blunt force trauma.

Witnesses told investigators that Garber had argued with another homeless man, Gilbert Botello, 42, who had also reportedly lived in the field. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation and Botello allegedly struck Garber several times on the head and upper body with an aluminum baseball bat.

Sunday, a Hesperia deputy spotted Botello in the area of Live Oak Street and 8th Avenue. He was arrested without incident.

Investigators are asking anyone with additional information regarding this incident to contact the Hesperia station at 947-1500 or Detective Jon Minard or Sergeant Tom Bradford of the Sheriff's Department Homicide Detail at (909) 387-3589. Those with information can also call the anonymous WE-TIP line as well, (800) 782-7463.
