It was an auspicious start for a new neighborhood watch program.

Friday afternoon, shortly after 2 p.m., the Hesperia station of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was called by a resident living near the intersection of Pearblossom Street and Ojai Avenue. The witness reported seeing two men allegedly stealing items from a vacant house and ripping things out of the walls.

When Deputy Jeff Farrar arrived at the scene, he found Jose Perez, 24, and Elson Galvan, 20, both of Hesperia, inside the building. The pair had allegedly taken 50 pounds of copper tubing, pipes and wiring from the house. Both were booked at Victor Valley Jail on charges of burglary.

Neighborhood residents had recently formed a neighborhood watch program. For more information on neighborhood watch, call 947-1549.
