More than a dozen candidates will be vying for Hesperians' votes come November 4. The two open seats on both the Hesperia City Council and Hesperia Unified School District school board races will be hotly contested, even as the two incumbents on the Hesperia Recreation and Park District board walk uncontested toward additional terms.

City council

Seven candidates are seeking the two open seats on the Hesperia City Council.

The names of Dennis K. Arquette, Scott Bennett, Russ Blewett, Paul Bosacki, Rochelle Garner, Mark Kirk and Mayor Mike Leonard will all appear on the ballot this November.

Leonard's fellow incumbent, Councilman Tad Honeycutt, has said he will not be running for a third four-year term in office.

Hesperian Lawrence E. Henson pulled papers in late July but did not return the completed forms by the deadline, according to Hesperia City Clerk Vicki Soderquist.

School board

Six candidates are seeking the two open seats on the Hesperia Unified School District school board: Chris Bentley, Bruce Henson, Chris Lindsay, Frank Rich, Anthony Riley and Eric Swanson.

Incumbent Bruce Minton announced his resignation at the August 4 school board meeting and board member Helen Rogers is not expected to run for reelection.

Victorville resident Erin Bakas (the HUSD's boundaries do not exactly line up with the city of Hesperia's boundaries) had previously pulled papers, but according to the San Bernardino County Registrar of Recorders office, Bakas did not file her completed papers by the deadline.

Park board

Incumbents Bob Chandler and Jack Hamilton are the only people running for the two seats available on the Hesperia Recreation and Park Board.

This will be Hamilton's first full term on the board, as he was appointed to replace Thurston "Smitty" Smith midway through Smith's term in 2006, when Smith was elected to the Hesperia City Council.

Water agency

Three candidates are seeking Hesperia's seat on the Mojave Water Agency board, including incumbent Richard Hall, Brian Pierce and Nancy Siegrist.
