Less than a month after Canyon Ridge High School began its first school year entirely on its own campus, the school's Associated Student Body officers organized a special event - a pie-eating contest with a twist.

The contestants, which included Canyon Ridge students, teachers and staff, had to fish out 10 gummy worms per pie with their mouths, then eat the slimmy sweets.Winners were presented with awards. The result was a high-energy, gooey mess of good-natured fun.

Emceeing the event was student Roni Hanke, who was one of the featured speakers when the campus opened in May.

Staff from Shadow Ridge, which is affiliated with Canyon Ridge, also participated in the event.

Canyon Ridge is part of the Hesperia Unified School District's alternative education program.
