Hesperia's newest charter school has announced an innovative partnership with the University of La Verne.

The coincidentally named LaVerne Elementary Preparatory Academy, which opened its doors on I Avenue at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, will be used as a development center for teachers, many of whom are ULV graduates. The two entities also will benefit from research that results from the unique partnership.

"The college will learn from whatever is taught," said ULV dean of college education Mark Goor, one of several ULV educators attending LaVerne Prep's open house on Sept. 2.

Goor said the university is especially impressed with founding principal Debra Tarver's drive, vision and commitment to educating Hesperia's youth.

"This principal is a miracle worker," said Mark Goor, ULV dean of college education.

Goor also complimented the Hesperia Unified School District, which chartered LaVerne Prep.

"We've been impressed with all our dealings with the school district," Goor said.

Dr. Robert Kirk, the president of the HUSD board of education, also complimented Tarver, who previously was principal at Pathways to College.

"I like the way she refers to the students as 'scholars'," Dr. Kirk said. "And setting expectations to go to college is just fantastic."

The two-way relationship between LaVerne Prep and ULV is especially impressive, he added. "It's going to be a symbiotic relationship. It's a win-win for both groups."

Tarver, who was beaming with pride and enthusiasm during the open house, was excited about the positive response the new school had received.

"We doing a great job," Tarver said. "The kids are learning. The parents are pleased. We're all happy."

LaVerne Prep is a K-6 school and includes a full-day kindergarten. All classes are a 20 students to one teacher ratio. Classical education is stressed. Besides history, geography, math and science, the academy teaches classical literature, penmanship, phonics, music, art, phonics, Spanish and Latin. Additional programs will be added throughout the year, according to the school.

LaVerne Elementary Preparatory Academy is located at 9608 I Ave., Suite #D, Hesperia. For more information, call 948-4333.
