Would-be pirates around the world celebrated on September 19, the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Originally an in-joke between two friends, John Baur and Mark Summers of Portland, Oregon, the tongue-in-cheek holiday came to national attention in 2002 when humorist Dave Barry published a letter the pair had sent to him about their invented holiday.

The holiday got even more exposure in 2006 after Baur and his wife Teri appeared in an episode of the ABC television series Wife Swap, as an in-character pirate family.

The holiday is especially popular online, where the event was commemorated on Google, Facebook and in the World of Warcraft.
