For the first time since 1988, Hesperia bus riders have a new option.

Victor Valley Transit Authority bus route 48, funded in part by the city of Hesperia, opened to the public in early September.

"It kind of serves the shopping needs. We haven't had a tremendous amount of commercial activity on Main Street until recently," Deputy City Engineer John Leveillee said Wednesday. "Our commercial center is actually growing and we wanted to give our residents the ability to use public transportation to do their shopping instead of having to drive their cars everywhere."

The route runs down Main Street and makes a loop through the Mission Crest housing complex.

"Basically from I Avenue to just past I-15 and Target," said Leveillee. "Target is essentially the turnaround point."

The High Desert Gateway Shopping Center, with a Super Target store as its anchor, opens on October 12.

"Right now ridership is low, like we expect for any route when it begins."

The city has no plans for additional routes at this time, according to Leveillee.
