They were both outsider candidates, outspent by their rivals and unsupported by both of the Hesperia Unified School District's unions, but the two Christophers are currently in the lead in the school board race.

As of 10:51 p.m. Tuesday, Chris Bentley and Chris Lindsay command 27 and 21 percent of the votes in the school board election. Both were turned down by the Hesperia Teachers Association when they sought an endorsement and financial support from the union, which went on to spend tens of thousands of dollars on candidate Anthony Riley, currently in third place, 269 votes behind Lindsay.

It's still early yet: Only nine out of 60 precincts have had their votes tabulated yet, along with absentee and early voting results. But Bentley has 3,000 votes, compared to Lindsay's 2,394 and Riley's 2,125. Candidates Eric Swanson and Frank Rich, both of whom were supported by California School Employees Association #684, the union that represents non-teacher, non-management HUSD employees, trail them with 13 and 10 percent of the vote. Bringing up the rear is Bruce Henson, with 7 percent.

Only a handful of additional votes have been counted in the Hesperia City Council race, with the same number of precincts -- three out of 40 -- still counted. And so Mayor Mike Leonard and Planning Commissioner Paul Bosacki remain in the lead, with 27 and 25 percent of the vote, followed by Russ Blewett with 16 and Mark Kirk with 14. The trio of Rochelle Garner, Dennis Arquette and Scott Bennett, none of whom paid for a ballot statement or spent much (or anything, in some cases) on signs, were all within 90 votes of each other, and approximately 5 percent of the vote each.

On the Mojave Water Agency, Richard Hall still has 52 percent of the vote for the Division 3 board of directors seat and challenger Doug Shumway has scooped up 72 percent of the vote for the Division 7 seat.

The next set of election results is expected to be released at 1 a.m. by the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters.
