Hesperia High's dominant Danny Reyes was named the Daily Press Athlete of the Year for Football Defense last Saturday.

The middle line-backer's presence on the field led the Scorpions to an 11-1 record and a Mojave River League championship. He had 149 tackles and five sacks.

The rise of Danny Reyes comes a year after his brother, Dominick, also was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Two other Hesperia High players were named to the all-area team:

Evan Montes - The senior was second on the team in total sacks with 103.
Melvin Emesibe - A junior defensive end, he had 11 sacks and 54 tackles.
Terran Poindexter named girls volleyball player of the year
Terran Poindexter, a stellar volleyball player since middle school, was named the Daily Press Athlete of the Year in Girls Volleyball last Friday.

The Daily Press cited numerous reasons for selecting the Sultana High School senior: Poindexter was a four-year varsity starter, she was named the league's Player of the Year, and this season compiled 270 kills, averaging 5.1 per set. The latter stat places her 10th in the state.

Other Hesperia players named to the All-Area Volleyball Team:

Erica Walter - The three-year starter from Sultana had 21 kills in her final game. She was also the school's queen of aces.
Brittany Moon - Suffering a torn ACL in 2007, the Sultana setter came back to earn all-league honors.
Brittany Westplat - A four-year varsity outside hitter, the Hesperia player tallied 204 kills.
Belinda Dunbar - A middle blocker, the Hesperia senior had 217 kills and 54 blocks.

Sultana trio named to Daily Press All-Area Girls Cross Country Team

Three Sultana High School girls were named to the 2008 Daily Press All-Area Girls Cross Country Team, according to the Jan. 13 issue of the Daily Press.

Named to the team were freshman Hannah Munyan and sophomores Jae Higuichi and Shayna Robinson. The Bird sisters, Cassie and Lainie, were given Honorable Mention as was Emily Harrison. Coach John Mahr was named Coach of the Year.

Hesperia, Sultana runners given Honorable Mention

Hesperia High's Daniel Gonzeles and Sultana's Jesse Lopez were given Honorable Mention honors by the Daily Press last Wednesday when the newspaper named its 2008 Boys All-Area Cross Country Team. Barstow's Isaac Chavez, who led his team to their fourth straight CIF State Division III title, was named the sport's Athlete of the Year.

Three Hesperia girls name to All-Area Girls Tennis Team

Three Hesperia girls were named to the 2008 Daily Press All-Area Girls Tennis Team last Thursday.

Savanna Jeffers, a senior at Hesperia High, was named. Jeffers won the Cops 'N' Jocks Scorpion Invitational in doubles and finished with an overall record of 40-8.

Sultana High senior Melissa Westerman also was named to the team. She was named to the All-Mojave River League team for four straight years.

Shelby McIntire, a Sultana sophomore, received her first all-league selection.

Sultana High School ripped Rim of the World in wrestling last Wednesday, 51-12

Hesperia comeback ends Serrano winning streak

An excited home court crowd helped lift the Hesperia Scorpions basketball team past the Serrano Diamondbacks, 55-50 last Thursday. In the process, the Scorpions ended the Diamondbacks' 34-game league winning streak.

Moreover, Serrano had a 19 point lead going into halftime.

Hesperia star player A.J. Mathis finished with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds. Sorm Venegas drained 13 points. Serrano's Jamaal Franklin was a veritable one-man team for the Diamondbacks, scoring 31 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.

Sultana doesn't get past Barstow

The Aztecs beat the Sultans in a nonleague game last Friday. The final score was 78-61.

Hesperia Christian defeats Academy for Academic Excellence

Led by Jordan Vargas' 22 points, the Hesperia Christian Patriots defeated the Academy For Academic Excellence, 66-50.

The Sultana High boys basketball team lost at Rim of the World on Tuesday, 61-49.

Hesperia loses to Victor Valley

The Scorpions didn't quite have enough sting to take down the Jackrabbits as Victor Valley prevailed last Tuesday, 69-66.

Grabbing a school record 23 rebounds, A.J. Mathis also had 19 points.

The Hesperia Christian Patriots crushed Bethel Christian last Tuesday, 73-23.

Hesperia Christian wins showcase

Hesperia Christian boys won the Bretheran Christian Small School Showcase on Saturday, January 9 at Cypress.

Hesperia Christian defeated Viewpoint 51-34.

Seth Thomas led the Patriots with 12 points and 10 rebounds and was named Showcase Player of the Game.

Sultana player Jashae Lee made the game-winning free throw with second left to seal the victory for the Sultans during a non-league home game against the Barstow Aztecs, 44-43. Lee finished with 15 points.

Sultana girls beat Rim

The Lady Sultans defeated Rim of the World, 59-24, on Tuesday.

Sultana was led by Jonay Dunn who had 15 points, three steals, three assists and three rebounds.

Hesperia girls nearly defeat San Bernardino

Despite a dramatic four-quarter ralley, the Hesperia High girls basketball team came up short against San Bernardino last Monday, 61-59.

The Scorpions trailed 53-38 at the end of three quarters.

Turning a huge game for Hesperia was Belinda Dunbar, who had 27 points, 16 rebounds and three steals. Malika Sofana had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Hesperia shuts out Serrano, 2-0

Hesperia's Giovanny Rivera scored both of the Scorpions two goals in last Thursday's 2-0 shutout of Serrano.

Assisting Rivera were Adam Estrada and Wualfre Gomez.

Sultana rips Rim of the World, 5-0

The Sultana High boys soccer team shut out the Rim of the World Scots 5-0 on Tuesday.

Two Sultans scored two goals each, Luis Rosas, John Gremer, while Tyler Carron had one goal.

On the defensive end, Corey Jacobs had four saves.

Hesperia trounces Victor Valley, 6-1

The Hesperia boys soccer team defeated Victor Valley, 6-1, at home last Tuesday.

Adam Estrada made two goals. Other Hesperia scorers were Joshua Higgins, Waulfre Gomez, Felipe Palacios and D.J. Clayton.

The Hesperia Scorpions held the Serrano Diamondbacks to three goals, but couldn't score in last Thursday's 3-0 game.

Sultana pounds Barstow, 7-0

Scoring was spread among seven players as Sultana defeated Barstow in convincing fashion last Thursday, 7-0.

Goals were made by A.J. Rosales, Brianna Gonzalez, Megan Baum, Brianna Johansen, Britney Robrts, Sasha Rodriguez and Chelsey Jones.

Sultana girls squeak by Rim

Sultana's Britney Roberts and Sasha Rodriguez scored goals to lead the Lady Sultan soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rim of the World last Tuesday.

Hesperia beats Victor Valley, 3-0

Mercedes Rodriguez, Daniele Rodgers and Nikki Yahnke each scored goals to lead the Scorpion girls soccer to victory last Tuesday at Victorville.
