The region's best high school football players - including a number from Hesperia schools - are gearing up for the second annual All-Star Football Classic, which will be played on Saturday, March 14 at Newton Bass Stadium in Apple Valley.

Besides the game, organizers are planning a combine to test the athletic skills of the players from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by a battle of local high school bands from noon to 5 p.m.

The event, which is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the Daily Press and others, provides scholarships for seniors entertaining college.

An estimated 4,500 were in attended during the inaugural game last year. North (north of Bear Valley Road) prevailed over the South team, 26-23.

The game is the brainchild of Carl Rapp, a member of the Knights of Columbus who played high school and college football in Southern California during the 1960s. Rapp, of Hesperia, played in an all-star game, which he says was one of the most memorable experiences of his athletic career.
