Attention young football players and cheerleaders, there's a new team in town.

Hesperia Wildcats Football, which features teams of players ages six through 14 and similar-aged cheerleaders, is forming teams. After teams are organized, they will play other youth football squads that participate in the Apple Valley-based Community Youth Athletic Program.

According to organizers, currently there are about 10 teams in the conference. They include teams in Apple Valley, Barstow, Adelanto, Victorville, Lancaster and Ridgecrest.

"This will be the first year," Greg Westcott, vice-president of the new Hesperia program, during signups at Tony D's Wing Heaven on Feb. 21. During the first signup event, the organizers signed up about 50 players.

There are five age groups for the tackle football teams: Mighty Might (6-8 years old), Freshman (8-10), Sophomore (9-12), Junior (10-13) and Senior (12-14).
The conference will also feature pep rallies with special speakers.

Games will be held at Cedar Middle School, according to Joe Nevarez, a program commissioner.

Nevarez also would like to encourage local senior citizens to get involved by volunteering to run the snack bar, announce the games or performing citizen patrol.

The organizers are currently interviewing head coaching candidates and looking for team moms.

But they are looking for very special participants who help foster camaraderie, encourage sportsmanship. They want the players to learn discipline, manners and respect.

"We want to make our community a better community," Nevarez said.

The next sign up will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 7 at Tony D's Wing Heaven, 13567 Main St., Hesperia.
