School board president Robert Kirk has been officially served with recall papers, but said he wants to hear from the public before making a final decision.

A process server hired by fellow board member Chris Bentley served Kirk at his home with a Notice of Intent to Circulate a Recall Petition on Monday evening.

"The hardest part for me was deciding whether or not to do it," Bentley said Tuesday. He announced his intention to begin the recall process against his fellow board member at the board's March 9 meeting. "Now it's just execute the plan."

Bentley accused Kirk of improperly conducting board business behind closed doors, and behind the backs of fellow board members and the public, and of preventing discussion on issues voted on by the board.

At the meeting, Kirk said he would step down within 60 days of Bentley filing recall papers with the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters, which he said he intends to do this week. But Kirk said things have changed in the week since he made his announcement.

"I've had a tremendous outpouring of support over the weekend and the last few days," he said. "I've had phone calls and e-mails and people taking me out to dinner and telling me that the last thing the district needs is for me to resign."

So now there's a new deadline.

"Right now, I'm kind of looking forward to the 6th of April, our next board meeting," Kirk said. "If I have a great outpouring of support, that's going to be important in my decision. If I don't ..."

"If he is going to step down, sooner rather than later would probably better serve the district," Bentley said, "But that is not anything that I have real control over."

Although Kirk said his mind is "pretty well made up," it's ultimately up to the community, he said.

"If the community wants these crazies [in charge] -- and that's what they are, crazy -- then I want off the board," Kirk said. "I think the community ought to have what they want."

The next meeting of the HUSD school board will be held on Monday, April 6, at 6 p.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.
