Krystal Elementary parents have voted, and students at the new school will be the Krystal Comets.

"We had our first PTA meeting last night and I unveiled it to them first," Krystal principal Tom Kirk said Friday. "We had an online survey going on for a while, and I took the three [mascot suggestions] that had to do with science."

Those would be the comets, the shooting stars and the Andromedas, presumably as in the Andromeda Galaxy.

"The parents that came to the information meeting, there was a paper [survey]," Kirk said. "It was a pretty clear-cut winner."

Parents also chose a light blue and black color scheme, beating out black and white or navy and white.

The mascot will show up on students' school spirit t-shirts, among other places, with a design by Hesperia Unified School District print shop worker Chris Vihnicka.

"He does amazing work," said Kirk. "It's very professional."

The school is set to open in August 2009 as a science, math and technology choice school.

"We are in the process of hiring teachers," Kirk said. "Monday night, some of the names go to the board."
