WRESTLING


Sultana wrestler Cody Bollinger was named the Daily Press Wrestling Athlete of the Year last Friday.


Bollinger placed third at 145 pounds at the CIF State Championships. He also reached the finals of every other tournament. He was one of the key reasons Sultana went undefeated and won all three Southern Section postseason tournaments and the Asics Southwest Showdown.


Other city of Hesperia wrestlers to be named to the Daily Press All-Area Team were Ryan Fillingame, a 125-pound Sultana senior, Sean Regan, a 135-pound Sultana senior, Danny Reyes, a 189-pound Hesperia senior, Brian Pinto, a 119-pound Hesperia senior, Marcus McArthur, a 140-pound Sultana senior, Chris Sloat, a 152-pound Hesperia junior, Jeremey Fillingame, a 171-pound Sultana senior, and Many Mazariegos, a Sultana senior who wrestled in the heavyweight division.


Sultana head coach Rocky Humphrey was named the Daily Press Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 27-0 record.


Receiving honorable mention were Ivan Pinto, Robert Marchese, Ray Delgado of Hesperia and Mike Ardito, Tim Collins, Michael Gonzalez of Sultana.


GIRLS SOCCER


Sultana girls soccer player Brooke Droge was named the Daily Press girls soccer player of the year on Wednesday, April 1.


Droge, a senior, was named for her consistent play and smarts. Thanks to Droge's leadership, the team won both the Mojave River League title and the CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship.


Danny Polmounter of Sultana, who led the Lady Sultans to a CIF-SS Division IV championship, was named Coach of the Year.


Other city of Hesperia players to make the Daily Press All-Area Team were Chelsey Jones and Sasha Rodriguez of Sultana High and Melissa Campbell of Hesperia High.


Megan Morgenstern and Brianna Gonzalez of Sultana were given honorable mention.


BOYS SOCCER


Adam Estrada, a striker on Hesperia High's soccer team, was named the Daily Press boys soccer player of the year on Thursday, April 2.


Estrada scored a school record 32 goals and helped lead the Scorpions to their second straight Mojave River League title.


Additionally, Estrada has a 4.0 GPA, an achievement which is opening the doors to several top college options.


John Gremer, a Sultana High School senior, was named to the Daily Press All-Area team. He finished the season with 12 goals and 15 assists.


GIRLS BASKETBALL


Making the Daily Press Girls All-Area first team in basketball last Saturday were Sultana sophomore Jashae Lee, and Hesperia Christian senior Katie McGrath.


Hesperia Christian coach Sally Orlando was named Coach of the Year.


Making the second team were Hesperia senior Belinda Dunbar.


Receiving honorable mention were Sierra Rick, Lauren Miller of Hesperia Christian, Marissa Cintron of Sultana.


Katie McGrath of Hesperia Christian was named the Agape League's most valuable basketball player. McGrath averaged a double-double: 11.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.


Patriots coach Sally Orlando was given the Coach of the Year award.


The Patriots' Lauren Miller and Sierra Rick, who is now throwing K's on the softball mound, were named to the All-Agape League team.


Making the Agape League's honorable mention list from Hesperia Christian was Anjelica Rosales.


RESULTS


WRESTLING


Sultana 125-pounder Ryan Fillingame, who early was named to the Daily Press All-Area Wrestling Team, won two matches on Friday, April 3 to reach the round of 16 at the NHSCA High School Senior Nationals Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, VA.


The final results of the event were unavailable by press time.


Meanwhile Fillingame's Sultana teammate Cody Bollinger, the Daily Press Wrestling Athlete of the Year, went 1 for 1 during the first day of the tournament.


BOYS BASEBALL


Hesperia defeats Serrano 6-4


Hesperia High beat Serrano at Hesperia 6-4 on Thursday, April 2.


Sultana wins against Rim, 7-4


Sultana beat Rim of the World 7-4 last Tuesday, March 31.


Sam Ward's two-run triple and Alex Robillard's two-run single made the difference.


Hesperia Christian gets cruxified


In the Patriot's Agape League opener, the Victor Valley Christian baseball team handed Hesperia Christian an overwhelming 23-5 defeat.


BOYS GOLF


Sultana wins league opening match with a score of 431 on Tuesday, March 31. Sultana beat Rim of the World, Apple Valley, Hesperia and Serrano.


Justin Kealoha finished second with a score of 79 at Green Tree.


GIRLS SOFTBALL


Hesperia beats Serrano 4-2


The Hesperia girs softball team handed Serrano a 4-2 defeat on Thursday, April 2.


Sultana can't get past Rim


Rim of the World defeated Sultana girls softball 3-2 on Tuesday, March 31.


Hesperia Christian beats Victor Valley 6-1


Hesperia Christian beat Victor Valley softball team 6-1 on Tuesday, March 31. Ashley McCloud went 2-for-4 while pitcher Sierra Rick had 13 strikeouts.


GIRLS TRACK


Sultana demolishes Hesperia


The Sultana girls track team demolished Hesperia 130 to 6.


Chelsey Jones won three events for Sultana, long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles.


BOYS TENNIS


Hesperia defeats Victor Valley 13-5


Hesperia High defeated Victor Valley High on Friday, April 3 in tennis. The final tally was Hesperia 13 and Victor Valley 5.


Sultana beats Granite


Sultana's boys tennis squad defeated Granite Hills 11-7 on Wednesday, April 1.
