The Hesperia Unified School District school board will try again on Thursday.

At Monday's board meeting, three of the five board members -- Hardy Black, Robert Kirk and Anthony Riley -- were absent. Legally, the board cannot conduct any actions -- other than to adjourn to a later date -- unless a majority of the five-member board is present.

Board vice-president Lee Rogers and board member Chris Bentley voted to try to have the meeting again on Thursday, April 23. The closed session portion of the meeting is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and the public session is scheduled for 6 p.m.

"Any time that we are unable to handle our regularly scheduled business, it can create considerable difficulties with legal and procedural timelines," she said. "Politics has certainly been playing a huge part in our ability to function and in order not to continue to be dysfunctional, we must as a school board come together and begin working together."

Riley had notified her on April 6 that he would not be able to attend the meeting, she said, but she was unaware until April 14 that Black and Kirk would be unable to attend.

In addition to closed session items, including an expulsion and employee discipline issues, the board was to vote on how many and classified (non-teacher, non-management) employees to lay off for the 2009-2010 school year. According to state law, classified employees have to be notified by 45 days before the start of the coming school year, which begins, for employees, on July 1.

"I showed up for a meeting," said Bentley. "I too cancelled personal things to be here today, but that's what we were elected to do."

"I don't know [if the missing three members will be back on Thursday]," Rogers said afterward. "I truly don't."

The school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 23 in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street, at 6 p.m. The closed session portion of the meeting begins at 2:30 p.m.
