With a week to go before the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, the Hesperia Unified School District school board has cancelled their one scheduled meeting for August.

Board member Anthony Riley made the motion during the closed portion of Monday's school board meeting -- which ran to 7:20 p.m., instead of wrapping up by the normal 6:30 p.m. end time -- to adjourn the meeting before it even reached the open portion of the evening.

"My apologies to everyone here," board vice-president Lee Rogers said, addressing the audience as she dismissed the meeting. "This has to be a first."

Board member Robert Kirk seconded Riley's motion, and it was approved 3-2, with Rogers and board member Chris Bentley dissenting.

"It was decided between the three of them to cancel the meeting, and so they did," said Rogers after the meeting.

"I voted against this," said Bentley. "I think it is the height of stupidity."

The night's business included hiring three new campus assistants for Oak Hills High School and paying ASR Constructors an additional $76,000 for their work on building the new high school, opening next week.

Monday's meeting already was something of a traffic pile-up, and included two items carried over from the July 13 meeting.

"I'm going to call a special board meeting, which I can do," Rogers said. "And I'm hoping, without hope, that the board members will show up. We have a multitude of business that must be conducted."

This is not the first time the board members have played tug-of-war with meetings: The meeting scheduled for April 20 of this year was cancelled due to the absence of Riley, Kirk and board member Hardy Black. A rescheduled special meeting on April 23 was also cancelled due to their absence. The board finally took up the April 20 business on the 27th. And then the board called a special meeting for Friday of that week to take another look at a legal agreement with teachers the board had tabled on the April 27.

The next scheduled meeting of the HUSD school board will be held on September 8 at 6 p.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.
