The Hesperia Unified School District school board will be meeting Thursday to consider the case of the district's former assistant superintendent of personnel services.

In a special meeting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, the board will meet with the district's legal counsel regarding San Bernardino County civil case CIVVS904495: Karen Kelly v. Hesperia Unified School District.

On June 8, the board terminated Kelly "without cause," meaning she did not violate any of the terms of the contract she signed in May 2008. The board did not disclose the reasons behind the decision, which was made behind closed doors before the start of the public portion of the school board meeting.

She filed her civil suit against the district on July 13. Kelly's next scheduled hearing in Victorville Superior Court is on September 14, 11 days following Thursday's special hearing.

She remains on the district payroll: Since Kelly was terminated without cause, she will be paid for the duration of her contract, which ends in April 2011. Her starting salary in 2008 was $138,653 and like most HUSD employees, Kelly is eligible for automatic pay hikes based on years of service. She also receives health and welfare benefits, travel expenses and a cell phone.

Thursday morning's meeting will be a closed session one -- the law allows for certain government business, including meetings with legal counsel to be conducted behind closed doors -- and normally nothing is publicly reported in detail afterward.

The next regular meeting of the HUSD school board will be held on Tuesday, September 8 at 6 p.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street. (Meetings normally take place on Mondays, but this meeting was bumped due to the Labor Day holiday.)
