Starting Oct. 24, there will be a new way to dial local calls, when the 442 area code arrives in the 760 area code region.

The new 442 area code may be given out to new phone numbers in the 760 area, starting November 21. Since two area codes now cover the area, all callers must now dial a 1 and then the area code, even for local calls. (911 emergency calls, and similar three-digit numbers, will not change.)

In addition to changing dialing procedures, all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed with a 7-digit telephone number, will need to be reprogrammed to the new dialing procedure.

Existing 760 numbers will not be changed and local calls will still remain local calls, no matter what their area code.
