McGruff the Crime Dog was once a familiar sight at public events and on television public service announcements, but the crime-fighting bloodhound has had a lower profile in Hesperia in recent years. On Wednesday, he launched what Hesperia Unified School District police described as something of a comeback tour.

His appearance at midday at Eucalyptus Elementary School, greeting kids at lunch and visiting kindergarten classrooms, is intended as the first of many events he will be appearing at this year, according to HUSD police chief Mike Graham.

McGruff first debuted in crime awareness television spots in 1980, advising children to help "take a bite out of crime."
