With the community's assistance, the Hesperia Recreation and Park District has an opportunity to secure a multi-million dollar grant that could transform the district's recreational offerings.

"We have a longshot opportunity," said park district administrator Cal Camara. "And it's one of the few grant opportunities where we don't have the responsibility of having to bring our own matching funds."

According to the grant description, the money can be used on an existing, older park district property in a high density area of the district. Camara believes Lime Street Park, which has a large under-utilized portion near the equestrian center, may be the perfect facility for the funds.

"Lime Street Park meets the criteria," Camara said. "It's our best opportunity to do something special."

But it's imperative the district receives substantial public input to qualify for the grant, according to Lindsay Woods, the district's administrative operations manager. Residents who live within park district boundaries are encouraged to attend.

"The grant process needs to be grassroots," Woods said. "We need lots of community involvement."

The first of five community meetings will be at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Lime Street Park Community Center.

Additional meetings will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6; 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10; 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14; and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

"We're holding different meetings at different times to accommodate everyone," Woods added.

The grant, which could be up to $5 million, is part of $368 million in state-allocated stimulus money that will be awarded to California park districts. The grants will be awarded in two cycles with the first offered in March.

"This is a tremendous opportunity because we're not putting any limits on the redesign." Camara said. "We want to hear everbody's idea. The grant [organization] wants to find out what people want."
