Eucalyptus Elementary students with perfect attendance may win themselves a new set of wheels.

Thanks to a gift from the Victorville Wal-Mart, the school will be giving away six bicycles, with helmets, to students with perfect attendance this year.

"I began to write to local companies, because we're trying to do something to get our kids here, to improve attendance," said Assistant Principal Teri McCollum. "It came up that one of our employees' fathers works for Wal-Mart. And we said 'you know, it doesn't hurt to ask.'"

He brought in McCollum's proposal and, on October 15, the store presented the school with six bikes and helmets. Two will be given away at the end of each trimester to randomly selected students with perfect attendance.

"We had an assembly and I kind of got all the kids all hyped up about all the prices," said McCollum. "A teacher came out riding one of the bikes. The kids were screaming. They were very excited."

This isn't the first time Eucalyptus has used rewards to encourage kids to attend every day of school.

"We have done incentive programs in the past, but money is tight this year," McCollum said. Whole classes get rewards if every student attends every day of a trimester, with prizes ranging from fancy pencils to pizza parties. "Every individual kid that has perfect attendance" gets to go to a movie day at the end of the trimester.

"It's not just the ADA," McCollum said. "The kids can't learn if they're not here."

But Eucalyptus wasn't getting the sort of results the school needed.

"When we looked online, most of the people who were doing really well, were doing really big items."

The bicycles might be big enough.

"I think so. They were so excited," said McCollum. "There's one little first grader. That's all she associates me with, the bikes."

And she's especially grateful that a business on the far side of Bear Valley Road was willing to help out a school in another city and school district.

"They don't have to do these kind things, especially for a Hesperia school. They could have done it for a Victorville school."
