The Rampage, a U-12 boys team in the Hesperia Youth Soccer League, did something a Hesperia team hasn't done in years — the Rampage became the top-finishing High Desert team at the Turkey Shootout Tournament.
Over all, the Rampage, which plays its home games at Hesperia Lake Park, took second in the tourney held on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 27-29.
The team's winning ways began Friday morning when the boys tied Las Aguilas of Palmdale 3-3. The team won a game 3-1 against High Desert team Flame On. The next morning, they faced the Barstow Green Machine and won 2-1. That put them in Sunday's semi-final game. The Rampage dominated the Colton Terminators 4-1. During the afternoon final against the Colton Sharks, however, the Hesperia players came up short, losing 0-2.
Not only did the Rampage play well at the end of the season, but the team took first place in league.Except for an early season loss to Victorville, the team dominated league play, finishing with a record of 10-0-1.
"I think we had a great season," said head coach Tony Gonzalez.
He credited his players for the team's success.
"I got a really good draft," he said. "We got players that really know their game. That made it easier for me."
One of the team's standouts is Coach Gonzalez's son Dominick, a midfielder known for his passing ability and team play.
"He's a really good player," his father said. "He's not greedy. He helps his teammates."
Gonzalez also coaches the U-8 Wizards tho went 10-1-1 in Hesperia Youth Soccer League play.
