The March 1 special meeting of the Hesperia Unified School District school board will either be a very good one for Superintendent Mark McKinney, or a very bad one.

The closed-doors meeting is to discuss the performance and contracts of the superintendent and cabinet members. If they've previously received unsatisfactory reviews, March 1 is the deadline for the board to let them know that their services won't be required in the coming school year. (Similarly, March 15 is the last day teachers can be told their services won't be required in the coming school year.) If they're not under that sort of cloud, however, their contracts are automatically renewed.

"If ... issues and concerns noted in [an] unsatisfactory evaluation are addressed and rectified to the satisfaction of the board by the March 1 evaluation ... then the employment agreement will be extended for another three (3) years," McKinney's contract reads in part. "If not, the superintendent may receive notice of termination at that time."

McKinney received an "annual growth plan" on Sep. 8, but whether that meets the standard of an unsatisfactory one, per his contract, appears to be a matter of interpretation.

"It just calls for [a special meeting] in their contract," said president Hardy Black, who called for the March 1 meeting. "I don't foresee any problems."

"Obviously, there are things that need to be done, things that need to be implemented," said board member Anthony Riley, who voted in favor of the Sep. 8 "growth plan." "I do not believe he has an unsatisfactory evaluation for him, no."

"It's just what their contract calls for," said Black. "I don't foresee any fireworks."

The Hesperia Unified School District is the largest district in the Victor Valley, teaching approximately 21,000 students, and its largest single employer, with approximately 2,000 employees.

The next regular meeting of the HUSD school board will be held on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.
