An anonymous tip led investigators to the nuclear probe Thursday morning stolen from a Hesperia construction site earlier in the week, San Bernardino County Sheriff 's Hesperia station officials said.

Someone called dispatch and reported finding the nuclear density probe near El Centro and Caliente roads.

The tipster saw the red case and radioactive stickers and remembered the news report about the stolen unit, Roxanne Walker, spokeswoman for the Hesperia station, said. A photo and story on the theft appeared in Wednesday's Daily Press.

Members of the San Bernardino County Fire Department, Hazmat personnel and Deputy Mike Cleary located the probe and determined it had not been compromised.

The probe was returned to its owner.
