As a candidate for the 59th Assembly, I have become disturbed at the rhetoric directed at illegal immigrants at 2 recent candidate forums by one candidate in particular. My firm position against illegal immigration is based upon the economic damage it continues to cause us and stepping around the process of immigrating here legally should not be tolerated, encouraged or rewarded. The failed policies of amnesty only encourage more waves of illegal immigration. My firm stance against all benefits for illegal immigrants does not mean that I hate them.

Having said that, blaming illegal immigrants for almost every problem in the state is unfair and untrue. Illegal immigrants did not create our $400,000,000,000 in unfunded pension liabilities, nor did they vote for the 16 Billion dollars in tax increases as part of the February 2009 budget. Donnelly's extreme vitriol has crossed the line and gives a false impression that Republicans are racists. A default position that if all illegal "aliens" (his word, not mine) were deported, it would immediately solve California's problems hurts the Republican Party. It takes our focus off the devastating problems of over taxation, over spending and over regulation. I hope that this toxic language is not repeated at the next forum on April 27 in Victorville. www.kenhunter.com.
