Three Hesperia firefighters have received promotions after attending the San Bernardino County Fire's Academy Program for Captains and Engineers, according to a department spokesperson.

Bill Villarino, who is assigned to station 302, was promoted from engineer to captain. Firefighters James Guffy, who is at Station 304, and John Martin, from Station 301, were both promoted to engineer.

The three, along with nine other county firefighters receiving promotions, attended the department's Academy Program for Captains and Engineers. The program, which was started in 2007, teaches department procedures and provides tools and knowledge to increase efficiency.

At the Captain's Academy Villarino also was taught management skills, leadership and team building.

Guffy and Martin learned about troubleshooting, pumping and other scenarios at the Engineer's Academy.

Promotions for the three were effective April 10.

Also receiving a promotion was Yucca Valley firefighter Kelly Carter, who is the first female in County Fire to be promoted from engineer to captain.

Two firefighters from Victorville and one from Lucerne Valley also were promoted, according to public information officer Tracey Martinez.
