Next year, Trevor Smith might get a bit of leeway with late books he checks out from the Maple Elementary School library.

The fifth grader won $100 in Scholastic Books for his school library at the Hesperia Unified School District's Don't Let Your Summer Be a Bummer event on May 1. The event brought together a variety of summertime activities available to Victor Valley residents, including the Hesperia Recreation and Park District, Boy Scouts and other groups.

The event took place alongside the HUSD's second Scholastic Book sale of the year, and since the sale was 50 percent off cover price, Smith's $100 prize was actually worth $200 -- or 30 different books for the Maple Elementary School library.
