Hesperia Branch head librarian Ann Marie Wentworth minced no words during Wednesday's "Ocean of Thanks" event at the Hesperia Branch Library.

"Without you we wouldn't be able to do the things we do," Wentworth said during the annual volunteer recognition in the library's Community Room.

According to Mayor Thurston "Smitty" Smith, the volunteers accounted for 7,320 donated hours, which effectively doubled the the hours of the paid library staff.

"I want to say a big thank you," said Smith, who has made volunteering a message during his mayoral tenure. "We all have an hour or two to spare. We can always give up of our time."

Robin Hoklotubbe, the county's Friends & Volunteer Services Coordinator, added, "We have come a long way in Hesperia. We need to remember we are here for a purpose."

County librarian Ed Kieczykowski also made a special stop to personally congratulate the veritable sea of volunteers.

"Government services are going to shrink over the next few years," Kieczykowski said. "We will depend on your service over the next several years."

Gerry Yniguez, the library's literacy specialist, presented the literacy volunteer award to Gary Gilliard, who has given the gift of reading to an adult learner.

"He [the learner] didn't know his ABC's. Now he can read," Yniguez said.

June Cline, who manages adult services, presented the general volunteer award to Dani Moore, a woman with a physical disability known for her service rat.

"She should be called 'Volunteer of the Years'," Cline said of Moore for all that she has done to help the library.

Receiving the Friends of the Library award was volunteer Kathy Harrington, a dedicated volunteer who has given countless hours of her time.
