When National Night Out returns to Hesperia in August, it won't just be celebrated in apartment complexes: For the first time, it'll take place in a local shopping center, as well.
"We're doing it this time at Target," said Roxanne Walker, the spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department station in Hesperia. Walker oversees the event in the city. Target is the national sponsor of National Night Out. "It's a little bit of a change of how we've done it for the last three years. This also makes it a bit more of a community event."
As usual, the event will feature the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. It'll also feature representatives of the San Bernardino County Fire Department, officials from the city of Hesperia, representatives of the Hesperia Recreation and Parks Department and other groups.
"All of the businesses [at the High Desert Gateway shopping center] I've talked out there will be participating in National Night Out," said Walker. "We'll have our command post out there, we'll have our music, [and] our Explorer [Scouts] will all be out there."
National Night Out "is designed to [help] people take back the streets and let the crooks know 'this is our neighborhood,'" she said. "We'll be providing information about neighborhood watch programs and teach people how to be aware what's going on in their community."
The Target event won't be the only National Night Out event occurring in the city, though: Four apartment complexes are again holding their own block parties on Aug. 3.
"The apartments wanted to participate because they really like to get their complexes involved and have a really good time. So I didn't want to exclude them."
