The Hesperia Star lost a true friend last week.

Sam Dearman, the man with the irrepressible smile, died at 84. I was surprised he was that old because he just told me he was 80. Ah, but that must have been a quick four years ago.

Sam helped promote the Knights of Columbus, the annual Holy Family Catholic Church Usher's Barbecue and the now annual High Desert All-Star Football game. While Sam would ably pitch the merits of whichever organization or event he was representing at the time, his greatest strength was his warmth, kindness and sincerity. Even if my editor duties were swamping my desk, how could I not take a few minutes to meet with a kind man wearing a "Will work for wine!"cap?

Over the years, the Hesperia Star staff has enjoyed many friendships while we work together to bring pertinent information to our readers. Sam Dearman, who lived as his surname would suggest, helped make all of our days brighter. We will miss Sam and remember the kind gleam in his eye
