Hesperia's new police station has been recognized for their green construction and operation.

The city announced on Wednesday that the United States Green Building Council has awarded LEED Gold certification to the Hesperia Police Department. The program recognizes the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Gold certification is the second-highest recognition, beyond platinum certification.

The station was recognized for its use of energy-efficient lighting; water-efficient landscaping and irrigation systems; recycling more than 75 percent of construction debris; using local and regional building materials whenever possible; use of healthier paints, carpeting and adhesives indoors; and using a solar electric system to produce about 78 percent of the building's electrical needs.
