The Hesperia Unified school board's vote to give pink slips to dozens of teachers wasn't their only vote for cuts at Monday night's meeting.

By a 3-2 vote, the board also approved two lists of potential budget cuts, designed to show the San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools that the HUSD would be able to close a $2.8 million budget shortfall in the coming school year.

The shortfall is, in part, a result of the district's deal with the Hesperia Teachers Association last July, where the district would restore some of the cuts made to employee compensation if the district's economic picture improved. It hasn't, really, but the pain officials expect to see coming will hit after the deal's language specified.

The first list, for $2,836,405 in cuts, included layoffs of six instructional assistants, up to 31 special education instructional aides, three district office support positions, two career center clerks, a vice-principal and two teachers from Sunset Point Night School and four secondary school counselors.

The first list also included savings included restructuring the school police department, cutting 10 days from the work schedule of school psychologists and five furlough days for the assistant superintendents.

The second list, which had an additional $620,569 in possible reductions the board could make, included laying off six clerical staff, three secondary school library clerks and cutting the hours of seven secondary school library media specialists.

The cuts represent only a possible list of what the district will do to cut costs in the 2011-2012 year.

"It's a preliminary [list of cuts]," Superintendent Mark McKinney said Wednesday. "We have a meeting on the 28th, and I'm going to bring that list back forward."

What the final list of cuts the board comes up with, however, is anybody's guess.

"It gets harder and harder, because we've made so many cuts" in the past, McKinney said.

The next regular meeting of the HUSD school board will be held on March 28 at 6 p.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.
