As the step-daughter of a military serviceman, Lindsay Rodriguez knows the many ways a family can miss their loved one who is serving their country.
With money being tight, Lindsay's family has received help from non-profit organizations whose mission is to help military families. One time, they received Christmas presents, which included a large American flag. On another occasion, the 9-year-old went to summer camp on behalf of an organization's generosity.
So it's natural that the Krystal Elementary School fourth-grader would consider helping others for her Girl Scout community service project.
"My step-father (Sgt. Vernon Trozzi) is in the military," she said.
Although he is home now, Sgt. Trozzi will go on a second deployment next fall.
"It hits close to home for us," added her mother Nicole Trozzi, who has four children. "It's kind of a way for our family to give back."
To earn her Bronze Award, which is the highest award for a Junior Girl Scout, Lindsay is collecting containers of new diapers and plastic baby bottles. She will present the donations at a special baby shower on April 2.
"She's helping to host the event," her mother added.
The girl's goal is to collect enough diapers and bottles for 25 families by the time of the event. However, the Trozzi family will continue collecting the items after the event and give them to the Lake Elsinor-based non-profit organization "Operation Shower of Appreciation."
Lindsay is a member of Girl Scout Troop 782 in Hesperia. Last Christmas she and other Girl Scouts collected gift cards for veterans. Future projects include a dog food drive and helping to develop a mentoring program for children of military service members.
Diapers and baby bottles can be dropped off at the Girl Scout Store at 15329 Bonanza Road, Suite C&D in Victorville. For more information, call Nicole Trozzi at (760) 954-1679 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
