A bitter, cold wind couldn't quell the excitement of Hesperia American Little Leaguers who gathered for opening day festivities at Lime Street Park last Saturday morning.

The band Dayzero and Mavericks mascot Wooly Bully got the crowd pumped up. But it was baseball and softball that the players came for.

"This is what Little League is all about," said Hesperia American board president Joe Nerio. "It's a cold day, but every year we're here."

Nerio also introduced his fellow board members and thanked the umpires for their hard work.

"If they make a mistake don't get mad at them. They're human."

Nerio implored the players to keep sportsmanship at the top of their minds and enjoy spirited competition.

"Keep your heads up. Go for the next win. Do your best. Make your parents proud."

After the ceremonies the teams played ball.

Dayzero lead singer Matt Lamb sang the National Anthem.
