Hesperia golfers are beginning to get nervous about the future of the Hesperia Golf Course. And no wonder. With a past that includes being a stop of the Professional Golf Association tour, the golf course has perhaps as much history as any in the Victor Valley. An 18-hole championship course, it offers a special challenge to players of all levels.

But the future of course is uncertain. Will it remain 18 holes, or will it become a 9-hole par 3? On the other end of the spectrum, some may prefer it become a more diverse recreation area. Frisbee golf, anyone?

Members of the City Council, who will likely decide on its future later this year, understand that it's not going to be an easy decision. But happenings outside of Hesperia may affect their decision.

Most notably, it looks unlikely that the Town of Apple Valley will be able to sustain their course as is. And what about Victorville's golf course? Hesperia's northern neighbor has had its share of financial challenges recently, which could affect the future of that golf course.

If Apple Valley and Victorville were to end 18-hole play, then Victor Valley golfers would need an 18-hole facility.... You can see where that might lead.

In any event, while it's understandable that golfers want to protect their local treasure, it's still too early to predict the future of the Hesperia Golf Course and Country Club.

But right now this game of golf is beginning to look more like chess.
