Two Mesquite Trails Elementary School students got a head start on saving for college on Thursday.

At the school's 3rd annual scholarship awards ceremony, part of the school's annual end of year awards presentation, two sixth graders received $500 scholarships, courtesy of the Bryan Clay Foundation.

Mia Barrera received the girl's scholarship, and Ronke Akoh, Makenzie Best, Alexys Garcia and Taylor Schow were the other finalists in the running.

Troy Burton won the boy's scholarship, and Cole Ambrosi, Zachary Ehlers, Ismael Garcia and Devon Magner were the other boys in the running.

The scholarships were awarded to students that had demonstrated great leadership, citizenship, and academic excellence, according to Principal David Stewart.

Stewart had some parting words for Mesquite Trails' 6th graders, who will be middle school students in the fall.

"Exciting day for us today. It's the last day of our careers at Mesquite Trails," he said. "Test scores aren't the only thing. It's an important thing, but more important is always doing right."
