Here comes the marching band. Look at the jets flying overhead. It's time to celebrate!

Whoa. Wait a second. Not too fast.

We've heard all before: the Ranchero Road underpass project is about begin. Then the project would get hit by red tape. Funding is often the issue. Before the Caltrans connection wasn't solidified. Now City of Hesperia officials are collectively crossing their fingers that the federal government will come through as needed on the project. If all goes as hoped, however, the long-awaited project could go out to bid next month.

Until then let's not pass out holding our breath.

I've said it several times before, but I'm going to keep on saying it: Some pool deaths and injuries of young people would be preventable if property owners chose to erect professional pool fences immediately around their swimming pools.

Why am I screaming about this now? Well once again pool-related tragedies struck the Victor Valley. It happens every summer, and it's not going to stop happening unless people take action.

Last Tuesday a Hesperia man revived a 3-year-old girl who was found floating in the pool of her family's apartment. Then on Wednesday a 4-year-old boy was saved by his father, a military medic. Both children were flown to area trauma centers. (Their conditions are currently unknown.)

While I don't know if all or any of these accidents could have been prevented by the installation of a pool fence, it's clear that some pool-related accidents occur when a child opens the family's back door and ventures out to explore the family pool.

When I was a boy my parents hired a contractor to put a fence around the pool after purchasing our home. My mother and father were the only ones who knew the lock combination until my younger sisters and I became teenagers.

Meanwhile, our neighbors didn't have a locked fence around their pool. One day a miniature poodle got in their backyard and drowned in their pool. It was very sad, but thank goodness it wasn't a child.

A few suggestions: Don't drop off your child at a large pool party for children; stay at the event and watch your child at all times around the pool. If you build a pool in your backyard, hire a contractor to erect a pool fence at the same time. If you have young children do not rent or purchase a home with a pool that does not have a fence around the pool.
