After decades of waiting, Hesperia residents may finally see a groundbreaking on the Ranchero Road Underpass project -- if the federal government cooperates.

Scott Priester, the city's Director of Development Services, told the city council during a budget workshop on Tuesday that the project has been submitted to the Federal Highway Administration.

Assuming no hold-ups by the FHWA, the project should go out to bid in July and construction should begin as soon as a month later.

The underpass project -- assuming no more surprise roadblocks spring up for a project that has been plagued with them -- won't be the only road improvements happening in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. After taking a year off from street improvements last year for the first time in a decade, the proposed Capital Improvement Program for the coming year includes $2 million for street improvements.

Funds used to pave roads come from a variety of sources that, for the most part, could not legally be spent to pay for firefighters.
