RESOLUTION NO. 2008-005
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
HESPERIA, CALIFORNIA OPPOSING PROPOSITIONS 94,
95, 96 AND 97 -- UNFAIR TRIBAL GAMING COMPACTS.
WHEREAS, new gaming compacts ratified by the Legislature in June, 2007 would benefit four of the State's wealthiest Indian tribes at the expense of taxpayers, other tribes and California workers; and
WHEREAS, the new compacts set a dangerous precedent for future agreements between other tribes and the State and represent a dramatic shift in Indian gaming policy in the state of California; and
WHEREAS, the new compacts authorize one of the largest expansions of casino gambling in history and would make California home to some of the largest casinos in the world; and
WHEREAS, Californians should have an opportunity to vote on whether or not to allow this change in State policy and the rapid expansion of casino gambling; and
WHEREAS, the Governor should go back to the negotiating table and develop compacts that provides [sic] taxpayers with a fair and accountable share of gaming revenues.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HESPERIA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Hesperia does hereby oppose Propositions 94, 95, 96 and 97 on the February, 2008, ballot, the Tribal Gaming Compacts.
Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Hesperia does hereby urge California voters to vote "No" on Propositions 94, 95, 96 and 97 on the February 5, 2008 ballot.
Section 3. That the City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of this resolution and enter it into the book of original resolutions.
