HESPERIA Only a few minutes into the last Desert Heat Operation of the year, San Bernardino County Sheriff's SMASH Gang Team members arrested a 16-year-old boy for allegedly firing a gun during a family argument, according to authorities.

As SMASH members were arriving at the Hesperia station Saturday at about 5 p.m., they received a call of someone firing a gun in the area of G and Sultana streets, sheriff's officials said.

When SMASH members arrived at the location, the boy barricaded himself inside a home for a little more than half an hour. He finally came out and was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, Sgt. Doug Hubbard said.

The roving, zero-tolerance operation began in Hesperia and moved into Apple Valley, Adelanto and Victorville.

While officials had some targets, most of the night's operation was a proactive patrol.

Saturday's sweep marks the last operation for the summer, officials said, but added that SMASH members will continue city-wide proactive patrols.

During such a patrol Friday night, the Victorville SMASH Gang Team arrested 29-yearold Brandon Blount, a known gang member, in the 15500 block of Fifth Street for drug sales, according to sheriff's officials. Blount was arrested for sales of a controlled substance and gang enhancements.
