Third-generation oil man Tom Goodspeed recently appeared on History Channel's "American Restoration."

Restoring nostalgic items is not really a hobby of Goodspeed's, president of R.E. Goodspeed and Sons Distribution, Inc.

"We're an oil business," Goodspeed said. "We happened upon this wagon and we thought we'd restore it and show it. It's not something we do all the time."

Goodspeed and his wife were watching History Channel's "Pawn Stars" when they saw other old soda machines at Las Vegas-based Rick's Restoration, which was featured on the show. Goodspeed's wife contacted Rick Dale about their soda machine and Dale's company got it cleaned up and working again.

"He's just a regular guy," Goodspeed said of Dale. "He's pretty unique. He's got a rough crew."

Months later, they got a call from Dale, who had been given his own History Channel show and was hoping the Goodspeeds had another project for him.

"One of our drivers out here noticed a Standard Oil wagon under a tree" at a Summit Valley ranch owned by Ron Webber of the Hesperia Feed Bin. Webber later sold Goodspeed the wagon when he sold the ranch.

The horse-drawn wagon dates to the 1890s and was used to deliver kerosene and cooking oil to rural customers.

"They'd fill up five gallon drums," he said, "and deliver them to different houses."

Goodspeed began restoration on the wagon, but never completed it, and it deteriorated over time.

"It's just been laying around here for about seven years," he said. "It was pretty much just bones."

By the time the wagon was delivered to Rick's Restoration, the wheels had broken and the wagon could no longer stand upright without support.

"It really deteriorated out here."

The company had the wagon from February to July and Goodspeed is now trying to figure out what to do with his refurbished wagon.

The episode of "American Restoration" featuring Hesperia's Tom Goodspeed, titled "Wheel and Deal," debuted on the History Channel on Oct. 14. It can be watched at History.com or purchased from iTunes. For more information, visit www.history.com/shows/american-restoration.
