A volunteer, two firefighters and a pair of sheriff's department employees have been honored by the Hesperia Chamber of Commerce.

The awards were given out at the chamber's second annual Public Safety Recognition Awards luncheon Nov. 21.

San Bernardino County Deputy Mike Cleary was recognized as the Hesperia Police Station's Chamber Officer of the Year, with six years of "outstanding police work" at the station. A patrol officer formerly working in the department's traffic enforcement and detective divisions, Cleary has previously received three awards from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers for his work combating drunk driving and was named the 2012 Hesperia Station Officer of the Year.

Sheriff's department office specialist Crystal Warren was chosen as the Hesperia Police Station Employee of the Year. A five-year employee at the station, Warren has been the station's statistical clerk for the part four years. Her expertise with the department's statistical processes have led to her training clerks from other stations in addition to her regular duties.

In February 2011, Larry Malm completed 1,000 hours as a Citizens On Patrol volunteer for the Hesperia station. Last year, he was elected to be the Vice Commander of the unit. The chamber recognized him as its Volunteer of the Year.

Firefighter of the year Jason McLaughlin joined the Hesperia Fire Protection District soon after graduating Sultana High School in 2001, and later joined the San Bernardino County Fire Department. The son of a county firefighter, McLaughlin runs the local stations' Spark of Love toy drive.

Fire captain Dave Meddles received the chamber's Outstanding Community Service Recognition award. Meddles, who has been a firefighter since 1983, is heavily involved in the Spark of Love toy drive.

The awards were given out at the chamber's monthly luncheon meeting at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
