The Hesperia High School Scorpions waited 22 years for a football stadium to call their own. They won't have to wait much longer for restroom facilities there.

On Monday night, the Hesperia Unified school board unanimously voted to build permanent restroom facilities at the school.

When the stadium was originally designed, district officials assumed it would be built in conjunction with a planned performing arts facility, where a ticket booth and restrooms for the public would be located.

But by the time the stadium opened in October 2006, a lack of funding meant it had opened without the performing arts building and its bathrooms. Spectators have been making due with rented portable restrooms ever since.

"Our goal is to have them ready before the start of the football season, but we've just started" the process, Carmen Becker, the district's director of facilities, said Tuesday.

The proposed restroom facilities could cost up to $500,000, according to a staff report presented to the board.

The next regular meeting of the HUSD school board will be held 6 p.m. Dec. 12 in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.
